Death of Archimedes by the sword of a Roman soldier

Although scholars offer varied accounts of Archimedes death, most agree a Roman soldier slew him following the siege of Syracuse. Several versions have the Roman enraged at Archimedes' refusal to comply with his orders. So respected was Archimedes that, upon hearing of his death, Marcellus, the Roman commander, ordered a monument erected in his honor.
